In 2015, 100 years after genocide forced millions of Armenians from their homes in Eastern Turkey, a young Armenian musician began a pilgrimage back to these lands. The journey began nearly 3 years before, when Tigran Hamasyan, an internationally renowned jazz musician, started reimagining and rearranging sacred Armenian music from the 5th -20th centuries for his Luys i Luso album.

In sign of respect and remembrance to those who had created and originally performed the music, Hamasyan decided to bring the music back to the places where it was born. Accompanied by the Yerevan State Chamber Choir, Hamasyan’s pilgrimage consisted of several of the most famous monasteries, churches, and cities that used be centers of Armenian life and culture, and are the ancestral homes of many Armenians, including Hamasyan himself.

The images and sounds captured during the journey were used to create an audio / video art installation. The piece was created to give audiences the experience of being on the road, in the place, and at the concerts. It opened in Munich, Germany in October 2015.
